The attorney told Melvin that the world didn't need another motion sensor that could be turned on and off with the same light switch that was used to switch the motion controlled light. He looked at the box that the electrical circuit was housed in and must have thought the the inventor was quite a quirky nut. He dismissed the invention, dismissed the novelty, and dismissed our friend Melvin. He then escorted a dejected Melvin to the door, and to the hallway that led away from his office. Melvin was disappointed, but realized that the attorney knew a lot more about inventions than he did. He was glad that he had met with someone who could see the value of motion sensing better than he could, lest he had spent a small fortune in fees to get the invention patented.



When he got home, he put the motion detecting switch circuit into the closet and forgot about it. But he did give up on imagining new inventions and new products that would improve lives and make the whole world a much better place in which to live for everyone. He learned software and continued to learn about electronic hardware. He envisioned and imagined. He learned more about chemistry, health, pharmaceuticals, and science, even though he had been a bright little boy with a very scientific mind from the very beginning.



One day Melvin happened to be in that same hardware store where he had originally thought up the improvement to the motion sensing light switch. He stopped over in the electrical department to see what new improvements had been made to the circuit. Low and behold, there, printed on the box, was a description for the exact functionality of the on and off switch that he had tried to patent a couple of years earlier. And on the same box was marked a USPTO patent pending number. Melvin was not shocked, as he had seen plenty of mistakes made by know-it-alls before. But he continued with his inventions, and eventually, many years later, he became known as one of the greatest inventors the world had ever seen.
